What to Expect on a Cruise: Using a Cell Phone

t mobile cruise plan

Go5G Next, Go5G Plus™ and Magenta® MAX customers get up to 5GB of high-speed data worldwide in 215+ countries and destinations. There are no data plans available on cruise ships with T-Mobile. For usage of voice and text on a cruise you will need to check on the T-Mobile website, as availability is limited and not available on every ship within a fleet.

Which T-Mobile Data Package is Right for You?

Make sure you call and tell them to turn off incoming calls and texts and you will not have any charges. But please call T-Mobile to verify this before trying it. T-Mobile has not confirmed if this new plan will apply to cruise ships and Cellular at Sea.

Un-carrier Customers Can Now Set Sail with Cruise Deals on T-Mobile Tuesdays

You will need to purchase wifi access for your cruise. If you have cellular turned on and make or receive a call, you will PAY due to use Cellular at Sea. 2-G may not be very useful, but I thought I would pass this info on to you all. I'm not sure how other cell phone companies handle this, so check with your company before trying this. With so many data packages available, it might seem hard to pick 1 for your trip.

All T-Mobile customers get unlimited messaging (iMessage, Facebook, etc.) and 1 hour of free in-flight internet on Gogo-enabled flights. Plus, Magenta® Plus customers get unlimited in-flight internet on all Gogo flights. Your international data package will start on the date you set, and you can enjoy high-speed international data wherever you are in the world. The good news is that there’s no data cap when you’re roaming. This means you can use as much data (and send as many texts) as you’d like, and you’ll never have to worry about an exorbitant bill at the end of a long trip abroad.

The great thing about this is that Simple Choice customers won’t have to do a thing to enjoy this new plan, it will be automatically added. Voice calls will come in at the low price of 20 cents per minute. I did enjoy watching other cruisers walking around in port with their phones/tablets out trying to find a free wifi hotspot to connect it. It was really nice to go anywhere I wanted in port and have access to data on my phone without paying a single penny for roaming. Since I use Google Maps a lot, it came in handy to navigate around Cozumel in my rented car. The cost of using the ship’s Wi-Fi will vary depending on the cruise line and the length of your cruise.

To avoid charges, before you leave home, enable Wifi Calling on your phone. He’s a lifelong traveler and took his first solo trip to San Francisco at the age of 16. Andrew formerly worked for The Points Guy and is now Senior Money Editor at CNN Underscored. Most modern smartphones can be brought to T-Mobile. Use T-Mobile’s compatibility tool to check if your smartphone is compatible with T-Mobile’s network. Even though data is slow, it’s more than enough for using Google Maps and sending texts through WhatsApp and iMessage.

This does not require having a cruise package plan. These cruise package plans will be activated once your cruise ship is away from shore and will display as “Cellular at Sea, wmsatsea, , or NOR-18” once you are connected. They each are a one-time charge with benefits that will last for 30 days. This comparison is for cell phone use on a cruise ship, not when in international cruise ports.

More than just talk and text.

Data and text are free but calls are $0.25/minute. I had 2 incoming phone calls during my cruise that I didn't answer. That's when I was told I could contact T-Mobile before my next cruise and they could turn off incoming calls and texts for the time I was on the ship to stop any charges. Currently data roaming can be very expensive and has caused many cruisers to come home to cell phone bills as high as $5,000 or more. Current data roaming is highly inflated at a cost of $10 per MB in Canada and $15 per MB in other countries.

Yes, my phone showed connected to "Cellular at Sea". I was on the Allure, then on the Independence at the end of Oct. this year. I don't know if it was an acceptable experience because it is very slow. Just don't text or make phone calls and there are no international data charges.

$50 per month, you get 50 minutes talk ($2 per minute over 50) and unlimited texting. If you use the device without using the ship's wifi at sea you will pay for it. That being said, the included wifi for the ports worked well, and that's a big plus. If you do not have a domestic texting plan, messages received are 20 cents each; if you have an unlimited texting plan, messages received are free. I never did get a bill for it so I never got to test my case against paying for something they claim I can't get.

So, tmobile does not offer this -- so i think we are to use something like cellular at sea. If i read above what you said, we should pay for the ship wifi and then using wifi calling and phone in airplane mode we WON'T get charged for phone calls? Most carriers, however, offer special plans or travel passes (for an additional fee) that allow you to use your domestic plan allowances while in port.
